To view the list of closed FBI files for deceased individuals, as of 2015, click here. Each of these files should be requestable without a privacy waiver. It's likely to use the FBI's RIDS Dead List as proof of death, but where possibile it's still best to include an obituary or other proof of death. If nothing else, it will likely speed up the processing for the request.

Each of these files have been confirmed to exist and pulled from the FBI Names Index. The files are organized alphabetically by last name, and where possible the file number is listed after the file name. Occassionally it's unclear if a spelling or typographical error occured only in the Names Index used as a source or if it applies to the original file and its indexing. When this happens, the error is retained so that requesters can be aware that the records may not be filed under the usual spelling. Older files have been transferred to NARA and are no longer in the custody of the Bureau. You can see what FBI records have been transferred to NARA here.
